(UNS S17400) 17-4 is a martensitic, precipitation hardening stainless steel. Subjecting 17-4 to a low temperature heat treatment can provide 17-4 with very high strength and hardness and with corrosion resistance similar to 304 austenitic stainless steel. Unlike conventional martensitic stainless steel, it is weldable by all conventional methods. It is a cost-effective choice where the combination of moderate corrosion performance and high strength is optimal. 17-4 stainless steel has a wide variety of applications, including oil field gate valves, chemical processing equipment, fittings pump shafts, gears, paper mill equipment, and aircraft parts.
